Toronto Blue Jays shutout Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays shutout Philadelphia Phillies 3-0 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario on Friday, June 15 in the opening game of their three match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
The Blue Jays will be very pleased with their performance in a game that was primarily dominated by the pitchers. Although Blue Jays’ starting pitcher Drew Hutchison left in the first inning due to a sever elbow injury, five relief pitchers combined to pitch
nine scoreless inning as the Blue Jays took a crucial 1-0 lead in the series.
After both teams failed to score a run in the first two innings, Toronto’s third baseman Brett Lawrie stepped on to the plate to secure a double to deep right to put his side 1-0 ahead in the third inning. Edwin Encarnacion grounded out into fielder’s choice
to third in the fourth inning to double Blue Jays’ lead to 2-0.
"(Ruiz) won't be able to play for a few days for sure," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "We'll know more by tomorrow."
"It's almost like a bug, if anything," losing pitcher Vance Worley said. "A lot of us are doing what we need to do to make sure we're in shape to play and things are just kind of spiraling out of control."
"I've never seen this," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said, explaining that the situation on Hutchison’s injury will be clearer on Saturday. “Until then, it's sheer speculation on the length, the severity or anything like that."
Yunel Escobar also displayed some high quality hitting skills as he grounded out to shortstop in the fourth to extend Blue Jays’ lead to 3-0. The Phillies had plenty of opportunities to get themselves back into the contest but they paid the heavy price for
their inability to take advantage of Toronto’s unforced errors.
It was only the third time the Blue Jays beat the Phillies in their last nine meetings and it will be interesting to see if they can produce similar performances in the next two games to secure a rare series sweep against the Philadelphia Phillies.
