Toronto Blue Jays sign catcher Yorvit Torrealba to a minor league contract – MLB News
Reports are coming that the Toronto Blue Jays’ have signed veteran catcher Yorvit Torrealba for providing a potential backup to their current catcher Jeff Mathis.
Though the veteran catcher and former Texas Rangers’ player, Torrealba was given a minor league contract but this is not certain that he will play in the Double-A affiliate in New Hampshire for entire season.
The team management wants him to play in the big league as soon as he gets enough practice in the minors.
“It’s an established big league player that’s had some success, Obviously Jeff’s been handling the bulk of the role right now. Him and Torrealba will split the job.” Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said of Torrealba and explained about his extraordinary
credentials which makes him a productive and all round player among many in the big league.
Blue Jays have already singed Mathis to a two-year deal worth $3 million. This late move of signing another catcher is all part of Blue Jays’ second half strategy. After their veteran and experienced catcher J.P. Arencibia’s right hand was broken, the Blue
Jays were in pursuit of another permanent catcher in the team.
Later the Blue Jays management not only started to focus on bringing another catcher into the roster but they also gave a new contract to their reserve catcher Mathis.
Now since Torrealba has arrived in the Blue Jays franchise, their hopes and expectations will automatically increase to achieve a good position in their own division. They at the moment are also planning to compete for a potential post season spot while
with the inclusion of a talented and experienced player, the Blue Jays certainly feel quite comfortable going into the later stages of the season.
Prior to join the Blue Jays, Torrealba was hitting .236 along with three home runs and 12 RBIs in the Rangers’ organization. He had played 45 games in the Rangers’ franchise this year and provided a great help on many occasions to win with ease.
Overall his career hitting of .258 along with 55 homers, 321 RBIs and .317 OBP also makes him a good and productive player in the Major League.
