Toronto Blue Jays sign free-agent reliever Francisco Cordero – MLB News
The Toronto Blue Jays’ have finally signed free agent relief pitcher Francisco Cordero after many speculations in the media that 36-year old is making a smooth run towards joining the Los Angeles Angels.
Earlier, a renowned sports journalist Mike DiGiovanna also commented on a social media website (Twitter) saying, “#Orioles, #Phillies, #BlueJays and #Angels pursuing RHP Francisco Cordero, who is expected to make a decision by the end of this week.”
Last season, Cordero went 2.45 ERA with 37 saves in 43 opportunities with the Cincinnati Reds. He has 327 saves in 397 career games and can play in the Blue Jays’ as potential backup for other pitchers especially for relief pitchers.
Blue Jays' general manager Alex Anthopoulos is happy for his new player’s arrival as he spoke to the media with a bit of optimism.
“Right now, I wouldn't expect us to do anything else," Anthopoulos said. "Maybe adding a reliever is probably the only thing I think we have a chance at doing."
Cordero, who filed for free agency following a season in which he went 5-3 with 42 strike-outs in over 69 innings, certainly is a great player and in the next season, his fans will also relish to see him playing in the Blue Jays’ uniform. His total earned money exceeded over $12 million last year with the Cincinnati Reds. While he also for some reason turned down a two-year, $12 million offer from the club. Some say, the Reds could not keep him as Cordero was asking for too much money for several more seasons which was not possible for the club.
Previously, Cordero has played for the Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers and Milwaukee Brewers over a career that has spanned total 13 seasons achieving a mark of 44-45 with a 3.17 ERA. Francisco Cordero will be joining Santos, Frasor, Oliver and Casey Janssen to form the new trusted core of Blue Jays relief pitching staff for the next Major League season.
Next season will be a great opportunity for Cordero to display his pitching talents where every team will come to achieve the biggest prize in Major League, the World Series.
