Toronto Blue Jays succumb to Los Angeles Angels 7-9 – MLB Update
Toronto Blue Jays were defeated by the Los Angeles Angels 7-9 at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario in on Thursday, June 28 in the opening game of their four match series of the 2012 Major League Baseball regular season.
With their superb victory on Thursday, the Angels have now improved their record to 43-33 and they are only five games behind the league leaders Texas Rangers. It will be interesting to see if the Angels, who have won eight out their last ten games, can
produce similar performances throughout the season to make it to the playoffs.
Angels’ closer Ernesto Frieri was very happy with his performance as he earned his tenth save of the season. Starting pitcher Dan Haren gave up six runs and seven hits in six shaky innings.
"If we're going to reach our goal, our lineup has to flow like this," Manager Mike Scioscia said.
"That double play was not easy," he added. "Howie hung in there to get rid of it and Albert made a great pick."
"When he left a pitch up over the plate, they didn't miss it," Blue Jays’ manager John Farrell said.
"They're ready for me," Frieri said in a post game interview. "They're looking for fastballs all the time now and they know that I throw it a lot."
Third baseman Alberto Callaspo had an excellent time on the plate as he hit his fifth home-run of the season in the second to put the Angels 1-0 ahead. Yunel Escobar had an RBI groundout to shortstop in the second and Jeff Mathis homered to left in the in
third to put the Blue Jays on the board.
However, Los Angeles continued to play aggressively with Mark Trumbo hitting a two run home-run to centre in the fourth to help his side reclaim the lead. Rajai David hit a sacrifice fly to centre in the fourth and Jose Bautista homered to left-centre in
the fifth to keep Toronto in the game. However, late offensive outburst from Trumbo ensured the Angels emerge victorious to take a crucial 1-0 series lead. The Angels will be happy with their performance as they managed to take a decent win over the Blue Jays.
