Toronto Blue Jays trade John Farrell to Boston Red Sox – MLB News Update
According to a leading sports website, the Toronto Blue Jays have traded their Manager John Farrell to Boston Red Sox. Firstly, the Red Sox sent Josh Beckett, Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez and Nick Punto to the Los Angeles Dodgers in a trade that free up
$250 million in future salaries. Now Farrell is on his way to Fenway Park. However, it is not clear what terms and conditions both teams have agreed to.
Bobby Valentine was fired right after the regular season ended. Red Sox posted their worst season in nearly 50 years. They also finished at the bottom of American League East Division. According to sources, Red Sox had been pursuing Farrell to for more than
a year.
They had talks with the Blue Jays last season as well but unfortunately, their discussions did not lead to a satisfactory outcome. The deal that was finalised on Sunday will send infielder Mike Aviles to Rogers Centre to bring the former pitching coach back
to the Boston. Aviles hit .250 with 13 home-runs and 60 RBI’s last season.
''I'm extremely excited to be returning to the Red Sox and to Boston,'' Farrell said in a statement released by the Red Sox. ''I love this organization. It's a great franchise in a special city and region, with great fans.''
''The team is in a different point than it was last year when we hired Bobby,'' GM Ben Cherington said after firing Valentine. ''The roster was fairly mature and we felt, mistakenly in retrospect, but we felt at the time, that we had a chance to win and
the team was ready to win. We're now at a different point.''
Farrell managed the Blue Jays for two years, finishing with a decent 154-170 record. He still had one year remaining on his contract and it will be interesting what compensation the Red Sox pays to the Blue Jays. He has worked in Boston as a pitching coach
for four years and he will be very excited about returning to the Red Sox. It was only the seventh time in history of the game that a team hired as manager who was in contract with another team.
