Toronto Blue Jays value low payroll for high opportunities
Time has done wonders for the Toronto Blue Jays. At one time the club’s salary expenses went well over a decent figure of $120 million, but recent news suggest a drastic cut in that figure as the payroll has jumped to $70 million instead. The figure however
could rise, depending upon the arbitration cases prevailing for Jose Bautista and Frank Francisco.
Paul Beeston, the President of the club, was up for a comment on the situation and wasted no time in discussing the matter to a great length. The Blue Jays have tough contenders in the form of the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees. These teams have
the power and the ability to topple the competition and fans are particularly worried about Toronto’s chances in the mix.
The low payroll means the Blue Jays have the right to sign on good players for the coming campaign, and Beeston was nothing more than vocal about that fact as he talked about how raising expenses would subsequently push up revenues. However, the club is
taking a cautious step towards the future. General Manager Alex Anthopoulos was able to discuss the current options available in the market.
"We're going to look to spend it the right way and not just spend for the sake of spending," Anthopoulos said. "But there's already been talk of how we can leverage this money into Latin America signings; are there other players we can go out and acquire?
The flexibility to go so many ways with it is very exciting."
Paul Beeston doesn’t fall from Alex’s interpretation of the situation. Furthermore, he is looking at a bigger picture in the mix that could secure the future of the club. With Vernon Wells moving out of the team for the Los Angeles Angels, there is a gap
in the roster and the payroll, but is it time to look for a replacement?
Beeston said of his club's future, "I believe the group in scouting and development is going to put us where we want to go. The way that we have scouted, the way we have developed, the way he is building the team, I think it is indicative of where we're
heading."
