Major League Soccer outfit, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Toronto-FC-c40744, were barren off a win in nine league matches and sat at the bottom of the Eastern Conference. Wednesday night’s game against Canadian rivals, Vancouver Whitecaps FC, was a welcome change in terms of results.
The Reds defeated the Caps at BMO Field with a final 1-0 score line to earn full three points after a long time.
The last win for the TFC came on May 7 against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Houston-Dynamo-c39542 at the same site. However, the aspect that made the event more special was the Reds’ revenge for the season opener, the 4-2 drubbing at the hands of the Caps at Empire Field.
The team has now jumped to 6th position and are tied with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/DC-United-c38901 at 18 points.
Where the head coach, Aron Winter, was far from satisfied with the performance, he appreciated the win.
“They were points that were important, but the way we played was not good,” Winter said. “But it’s important at this moment to get the points. In the first half we had good opportunities but in the moment we are in front of the goal we have to be sharper.”
Toronto did not play their big guns, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alan-Gordon-c4252, in the, saving them for this weekend’s Nutrilite Cup Championship faceoff. Consequently, 65 percent of the possession was relinquished to the visitors.
Only three shots were taken on the target and even the lone goal of the game came from the spot, thanks to Greg Janicki’s tackle on Dutchman Nick Soolsma. The international import stepped up to convert the penalty.
This was TFC’s first game of the week against the MLS rivals. Winter and company face the same opponent again on Saturday in return leg of the NCC final at the same site.
While the team won the league match after a long time, the coach did not ignore the NCC final.
Saturday’s game is as important as the midweek league fixture. The team needed the three points to make a recovery in the points table but the final match has its own importance for the Reds, the head coach explained.
“We wanted to have a good start for this week. Obviously Saturday is another important one against the same opponent so it feels good to get the three points for the league,” said Winter.
The second leg of the NCC final was originally scheduled for May 27 and the Caps were leading the score line by a goal, but poor weather postponed the match to July 2.
The Caps, after the loss, sit at the bottom of the Western Conference with a mere 14 points from 18 matches.
