Toronto Maple Leafs, Luke Schenn refresh contract negotiations –NHL offseason Update
While all other teams in the National Hockey League (NHL) along with their players are resting and preparing for training camp in September and the beginning of the new season in October, Toronto Maple Leafs and defenseman, Luke Schenn, are still confused
over what will happen regarding the restricted free agent.
The question on everyones mind now after seeing what the result of Shea Weber’s hearing was, after Nashville Predators had filed it themselves, is whether Toronto Maple Leafs will sign the young defender or not.
Schenn remains at a disadvantage due to him not yet being eligible to file for a salary arbitration hearing, which requires at least, having played four consecutive regular seasons.
The Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada native, is coming out his third regular season as he just finished up his three-year, entry-level contract
Drafted as the fifth overall pick during round-one of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft, Luke Schenn might not have performed up to expectations up until now, but he still remains a contributing force for the struggling Canadian team.
Prior to being picked up in the NHL, Schenn played with Western Hockey League (WHL) franchise, Kelowna Rockets for three seasons, along with performing in six matchups with the Canadian national team in the World Junior championships.
In his first season with Toronto, Luke Schenn appeared in 70 games and scored 14 points (2 goals, 12 assists) while finishing off with a -12 plus-minus rating. He also registered career high penalty minutes (71) that season, which really caught the management’s
eye.
The following two seasons remained slow for Schenn, but they brought gradual and constant improvement. It might not have been the biggest in the league like Steven Stamkos, but it was something.
During the 2009-2010 season, Schenn contributed 17 points (5 goals, 12 assists) in 79 games, while recording career high stats last season by playing all 82 games and putting up 22 points (5 goals, 17 assists).
Since there is still more than a month remaining before the training camp is set to begin, according to his agent, Schenn is in a good position to recieve a contract well before than.
