Toronto Maple Leafs' GM Brian Burke confident with current team -NHL Update
With teams around the National Hockey League (NHL) tensed and making multiple phone calls at a single time, Toronto Maple Leafs’ general manager, Brian Burke, remained calm and kept his cool by expressing his confidence in his current roster after the February
27, trade deadline was reached Monday afternoon.
As Toronto dropped down in recent days from their eighth number spot in the Western Conference, analysts are worrying about where the team will end up when it all comes to an end, but Burke is not one of them.
"In my mind, there is nothing we could have done (Monday) that would have made us better now," Burke said. "It was all stuff that would have made us better down the road and our fans have lived through that. We have to see if this group is good enough to
win and keep our assets."
According to GM Burke, adding players without thinking straight and having their chemistry disrupted at this crucial moment of the 2011-2012 NHL regular season would have been plain out illogical.
Despite their recent slide, Burke is confident that his team will find a way back into the playoff race once again and not lose it like last season.
"You can't change the course just because you have 10 bad days out of 180 days in the season," Burke added. "I still believe this group can get it back on the rails. The schedule favors us in terms of teams we play and how we have control whether or not
we get into the playoffs. Panic cannot be a part of this."
With all that confidence does not mean Burke is not thinking straight and not planned for the worst. The General Manager of one of the league’s most successful clubs has a plan on his mind if the team fails to reach the playoffs, but it will not be announced
till the offseason of course.
Toronto is currently number 10 in the Eastern Conference with 65 points, only three below eighth place Winnipeg Jets, and with over a month still left to play, the Maple Leafs have more than enough time to catch up.
