Toronto Maple Leafs assistant GM Dave Nonis hopeful of quick Luke Schenn, Matthew Lombardi comeback
Toronto Maple Leafs are still missing two of their players, Luke Schenn, who has still not come to mutual terms over a contract with the Canadian franchise and, Matthew Lombardi, a player who is out due to concussion related injuries, which limited him to
only two games last season.
Regarding Luke Schenn, a 21-year-old defender from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, will be entering his fourth consecutive season with Toronto after being picked up by the team as the fifth overall selection during round-one of the 2008 National Hockey
League (NHL) Entry Draft, if he can get a contract that is.
Finishing up his three-year, entry-level contract with Toronto, Schenn might not have had the best performance a rookie player could have but that does not stop the Maple Leafs management from having faith in him.
Toronto Maple Leafs assistant general manager, Dave Nonis, describes the situation as something only being delayed due to something which is not performance related and that a contract will be eventually signed.
“Contracts sometimes take a little longer to get done”, Nonis said. “This isn’t the first one that’s gone into late August”.
In all, Schenn has played 231 NHL matchups and boasts a record of 53 points (12 goals, 41 assists) along with an accumulated plus-minus rating of -17.
Matthew Lombardi on the other hand is a top-notch performing player who can certainly take Toronto to the next level. Selected by Calgary Flames as the 90th overall pick during round-three of the 2002 NHL Entry Draft, Lombardi will be entering
his ninth straight season in the NHL if he can make a comeback in time for next season.
"With Matthew, there is no timetable. He's getting better. He's been feeling very good. His workouts have increased in duration and intensity, but he won't be playing for us until he's ready to play. So whether that's a month or six months, who knows when
that's going to be. We're not going to rush him, but we're going to be pushing as hard as we can to get him ready and prepared", Nonis added on Lombardi.
Both players are expected to return before the new season starts, but only time will tell whether or not they are able to.
