Toronto Maple Leafs’ coach Randy Carlyle keen on enforcing intensified training regimen-NHL News
Toronto Maple Leafs’ coach, Randy Carlyle, has the one and simple message for his players that they should be ready to undergo a coaching lesson and drill any time of any season and be mindful of the fact that their displeasure over the workload is least
likely to impress him.
Carlyle proved true to his words and style at the team’s two-day training camp held at Mastercard Centre by making the players to undergo a number of teaching lessons and exercise drills.
Leafs did not have another choice than to buy in the coach’s disciplinary and learning programme, irrespective of how they felt about it.
A larger number of media men watched the camp for about 16 minutes. While explaining the programme, the coach said:
"For me (it is training camp) in some degree and for the players a little bit. I don't think they spent an hour and a half or close to two hours, but that's all part of the learning curve that we feel is necessary to get our message (across) and to sell
our programme to these players at this time."
He emphasised the need for such programme at all times of the season and was not convinced with the notion that the programme could be less justified and effective during the concluding period of a season.
According to him:
"You're always going to ask the same questions. Did we do enough? Did we do the right things? It's similar to training camp. When people ask me if you've overexposed, overcoached or tried to push too much at them, I don't think that's quite possible in the
situation I've been presented here."
A number of the players, who were made to go through the intensified workout during the training sessions, have spoken of the preciseness and clarity of the coach’s main strength, which, they said, will help them in their future games.
Defenseman, Carl Gunnarsson, said that Carlyle is very clear in his approach and about his targets, which he aims to achieve out of the programme.
Gunnarsson also said that the coach was well aware of his plans and said that introduction of such a programme is going to benefit the team, which lacked a voice in the locker room.
The coach admitted that his aggressive approach on the training and fitness of the players could lead to deteriorated relationship with the players as well as the team management, but said that he was not bothered about it.
Even though the official is not focused on the team’s position in the regular season, Leafs still have a chance to make it to playoffs this year.
They are at the 12th position in the Eastern Conference with 67 points.
