Toronto Maple Leafs’ defenseman Cody Franson joins Brynas IF Gavle of the Swedish Elite League
Cody Franson, a professional ice hockey player and a defenseman who plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference, has now signed with Brynas IF Gavle in the Swedish league.
A team based in the Sweden’s city Gavle and plays in the Swedish Hockey League (SEL), signed the blue liner because of the National Hockey League (NHL) lockout but still there are possibilities that he could return to Toronto Maple Leafs.
Talking to media on Monday, Gerry Johannson, who is agent of the Canadian player, mentioned the possibilities how his client could return to the top league of the world. According to him if the lockout ends, then Toronto Maple Leafs would have to sign the
player again and he will come back. Johansson stated,
“We would have two hurdles to clear — the lockout first and the Leafs would have to sign him. If those two things happen, he can return.”
Franson, who is a restricted free agent, had earlier made it clear that he would be playing whole of the season in the Europe but Matias Strozyk, a sports reporter informed that Brynas have also confirmed that Cody Franson’s contract is for whole season rather
than just the lockout, as he tweeted on
Matias Strozyk@MaStrozyk that,
“Brynäs confirm the Cody Franson signing I mentioned earlier. Contract for entire season, not just lockout. #NHL”
Strozyk also reported that their deal was done on 1st October and currently no date has been fixed by the team, for the debut of the player, as he tweeted,
“Deal was done late today, per press release. No date set for debut at this stage. #Leafs”
The Surrey, British Columbia born 25-year-old player was also very excited and happy on the move and his new team, as he said,
"It's really inspiring to come to Brynas and stay the whole season. Now that I got a chance to come here myself, there wasn't much to think. Heard only positive from those who've been here before ... Probably takes a couple of games to get used to but I
look forward to it and see it as good experience."
