Toronto Maple Leafs sign 2011 NHL Entry Draft pick Stuart Percy to entry-level deal -NHL News Update
The Toronto Maple Leafs signed their second first round 2011 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft pick, Stuart Percy, to a three-year, entry-level deal on Tuesday, November 22, 2011, announced the Canadian franchise, which leaves them with one more prospect
in the pipeline.
Stuart Percy was drafted as the 25th overall pick by Toronto, three picks after they selected Tyler Biggs, as the 22nd overall in the first-round, who is currently attending the University of Miami in Ohio.
The 18-year-old defenseman, who is also the captain of the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), has been an avid follower of the Toronto Maple Leafs ever since he was introduced to the spot at a young age and could not be
happier at the occasion.
“I’ve always loved the Leafs and watching the games and it’s great to be part of the organization,” Percy said earlier this week. “Watching games on TV and knowing some of the guys, it’s like I have the inside scoop on what they are like off the ice.”
The contract between Toronto and Percy is a three-year mandatory entry-level deal, of which the financial terms and conditions were not officially released by the club. He will obviously not begin playing with the team this season, but it is highly likely
that Percy will be able to impress the club in next year’s training camp and potentially land a spot on the season roster.
Before being drafted, Percy had spent one season with the Toronto Marlboros, followed by the next two with the St. Michael’s Majors in the OHL. He recorded 34 points (4 goals, 30 assists) in his second year with them and is currently participating in his
third straight season with the minor league team.
This season in the minor league will certainly be a testing phase for both the player and the Maple Leafs, who will be looking at all aspects of his performance in order to consider playing him in the major league next season.
Keeping up with Percy as the season progresses will be thrilling to see whether the player can meet or even go beyond NHL level expectations.
