Toronto Maple Leafs sign goalie Ben Scrivens to two-year contract –NHL Update
The Toronto Maple Leafs have secured goaltender Ben Scrivens to a two-year contract, giving him $600,000 in the first year of the deal and $625,000 in the second, something which he had wanted to do throughout the year after becoming a free agent.
The 26-year-old goalie was undrafted into the National Hockey League (NHL) and was picked up the Maple Leafs, with whom he played the 2011-2012 NHL regular season with in 12 games, gaining four wins and five losses while maintain a save percentage of .903
and 3.13 goals-against average.
"It's a big weight off," Scrivens told TSN. "For me it was a long summer. I've never really been through a process like that so [I'm] happy to have that experience, that learning curve, behind me now."
While the Toronto Maple Leafs have named James Reimer as their main goalie for the upcoming regular season and will be the starting man for them in the net, Scrivens will be expected to step in if there is any sort of problem in terms of performance or if
the starter is unable to play due to any reason.
"The only thing that was going to help me in contract talks was my play on the ice, so that's what I worried about last year," Scrivens told TSN. "There's nothing else I could have done this summer, so I kind of just let the chips fall where they may, and
I'm happy that part's behind me now ... I can get back to skating and working out and getting ready."
This year’s training camp is something that the backup goalie is certainly looking forward to as it will give him a chance to even fight for the starting spot if Reimer fails to impress the Toronto Maple Leafs and Scrivens wins the position.
There is no mystery to the fact that the Toronto Maple Leafs are desperate to solve the issues their facing in the goaltending department, and at the age of 26, this just might be Ben Scrivens time to shine in the position he has worked so hard throughout
his life to get.
