Toronto Maple Leafs sign their 22nd pick of the 2011 NHL draft Tyler Biggs in an entry-level deal
Tyler Biggs of Miami RedHawks Men’s Hockey Team has decided to quit college hockey and turn professional. He has signed an entry-level deal for three years with National Hockey League’s team Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday.
19-year-old Biggs has already tasted a lot of success at international level by representing Team U.S.A at junior hockey tournaments. He mainly played hockey in Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), junior hockey at Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL)
and Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL).
Born in Mississauga, Ontario, Tyler is a son of former NHL player Donald Biggs, who was drafted by Minnesota North Stars from Oshawa Generals of OHL, back in 1983. Don was traded to Edmonton Oilers two years later and then signed with Philadelphia Flyers
in 1987, where he played 12 NHL games and scored couple of points.
Don captained and played for many teams in AHL, OHL, IHL, ECHL but the best time he spent was with Cincinnati Cyclones from 1993-1999 where he was the captain and became very popular among the fans of team.
Like his father, Tyler has impressed everybody since making his debut with Toronto Junior Canadiens midget team and showed a brilliant performance in his first season by scoring 86 points, 40 goals, 46 assists in 72 games and got a call from their senior
team for the last few games of the season.
In National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) hockey, he scored 17 points in the 37 games he played with nine goals and eight assists. But his major achievements have definitely been for Team USA in junior world championships and that is where he has
earned laurels.
In 2010 Under-17 World Hockey Challenge, the 6-foot-3, 210 pounder right winger scored five goals and one assist for total of six points and helped his team win the tournament. Later in the year, he was part of US team which won the Under-18 World Junior
Championships, though he could not score any point.
But an year later in the same championship, he made much more contribution than the previous year as he scored two goals and one assist to help Team US defend their title. One of his goals came in overtime against Canada in semi-finals.
