  1. Forest hill, high park, rosedale...

Those are the safest and closest.  No matter where you go, schools are going to be very similar.

  2. All the neighbourhoods are good. Education is the same throughout the Province. Canada is a safe country, only the crooks carry guns.

Re: safety. It depends on what you expect.

  3. Contact  a real estate agent and they can advise based on your expectations, ethnic background and financial situation.

Look for something that is near to the subway line and transit system.

Are you are going to buy or rent? The number of people in your family, age of your children, etc. are all important factors.

    Good luck!

  4. A lot depends on your budget and whether or not you intend to rent an apartment or buy a condo/house.

For true city living, I would suggest these possibilities.  Al of which are safe and close to downtown.

East York, where you can be on the subway line and still buy a detached house for between 350,000 to 400,000.  The schools are decent and you have easy access to local shopping of big box (Walmart, etc) if that's what you're looking for.

Bloor West Village - better restaurants and shopping, and arguably some better schools.  A detached house will cost you more like 500,000 to 600,000.

Willowdale - good schools, bigger lots, easy access to downtown and shopping.  A detached house will cost between 550,000 to $800,000.  This areas was basically the suburbs in the 50's so it's got a very quiet feel and there are also townhouses and condos to buy for less than the price of a detached house.

Many immigrants prefer living in the suburbs (Mississauga, Markham, Scarbourough etc)  There is still easy access to downtown vs GO transit you will still have good opitons for entertainment, excellent schools, etc.  The benefit of the suburbs is that detached houses cost much less.  You can still buy a detached house in a good part of Mississauga or Scarborough for around 350,000 and chances are the house will be newer and better renovated than in Toronto.  Taxes are more expensive in the suburbs but city services are much better.

  5. If you want close to downtown, be prepared to pay for it.

Plus, if you're tall, some of the basements aren't very high.  The houses can be very run down.  Much congestion with traffic, lack of green spaces.

Every neighbourhood has it's bad and good pockets.  The worst neighbourhood in town can be right next to one of the nicest and the difference can be only a matter of a few streets.

Stay away from Jane/Finch and the Malvern area (sorry to those that live there and are otherwise peaceful, law abiding citizens).

East York is a great area.  So is south Scarborough and south/east North York (all areas within Toronto)
