Question:

Toronto Recommendations

I am taking Amtrak up to Toronto alone. I have never been to Canada, so I need to know the answer to a few questions:

1. has anyone been to Union Station (where Amtrak arrives/departs)? Are there cabs there? Do you hail them or do you have to call? Are they easily identifiable (like NY's yellow cabs)?

2. Are there any special laws in Canada that I should know about?

3. Anything you recommend I do there?

  1. I am at Union Station everyday. You will find a cab very easily. ANd as for things to do. Just walk around! lol there is a lot!

The answerer above said it all perfectly!

  2. Yes, there are cabs right outside Union station. You will not have to call. There are several cab companies, with different coloured cars, but they will be easily identifiable as cabs and will have the company name on the side.

There's no special laws, just the usual type of stuff. Generally being polite and respectful of the city will cover the possibilities.

Walk around! There are quite a few neat little places in the downtown area. Explore the shops on Queen street and restaurants on King, check out the CN Tower, take the Ferry over to Toronto Island. Visit the mall at the Eaton centre. Take transit to Canada's Wonderland if you like rollercoasters. Have an ice cream and walk along the boardwalk in the Beaches. Check out a comedy club or the theatre. It is a great city to explore in.

  3. If you like jazz, definitely go to The Rex Hotel on Queen Street.  Any cabbie will be able to take you there, or if you are on subway, go to Osgoode station and walk West on Queen Street.  If you are at a hotel ask your concierge or front-desk person about Queen Street -- it is very neat to walk, West of University Ave.
