Torres hints Chelsea interest after Liverpool reject a £35 million bid
According to reports Liverpool rejected a £35 million bid for star striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707 by defending champions Chelsea. The Blues have been following the Spanish striker for a while now and were linked with a possible move over the summer, but former
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 manager Roy Hodgson convinced the striker to stay at Anfield. The Blues made a shock £35million bid for the striker today, which was promptly rejected by Liverpool. A spokesperson from the club said in a statement, “Chelsea have made a bid for Fernando
which has been turned down. The player is not for sale.”
However, it is understood that the Spaniard has asked the Reds to consider selling him to the Blues only after a few hours after Liverpool rejected their bid. It is expected that after the player’s comments, Chelsea will making an improved bid which could
see Torres arriving at Stamford Bridge before the deadline for the January transfer window. After three and half uneventful years at Anfield, the Reds forward seems to want a new challenge and Chelsea are providing the perfect opportunity for that.
Despite Torres claiming to be open to a move to Chelsea, the final decision lies with Liverpool at this stage with the player not having a release clause in his contract. It is thought that £35 million is not enough for the striker and an improved bid of
£50 million by Carlo Ancelotti’s side may actually see the striker making a shock move to Chelsea during the winter transfer window. It is very much likely that the Blues will make the improved offer, with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich a renowned fan of the
forward.
In the past, Abramovich has spent more than he should have on players that were not necessarily a good buy for the club, with his only motivation being either personal friendship or admiration. The biggest example of this was http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Andriy-Shevchenko-c6014, the former
Ukrainian international. He arrived at the club in the summer of 2006 for an astronomical amount of €75.2 million and was undoubtedly the biggest flop in the history of the club. His career at Stamford Bridge was plagued with injury and spells of inconsistent,
unimpressive performances which saw him secure a place as a bench warmer.
It seems like history is about to repeat itself as Abramovich seems determined to land the Spanish striker. However, Torres might not be a flop like Shevchenko, on the contrary the striker could partner with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Didier-Drogba-c11044 really well at the front. Torres
could very well be the missing piece of the puzzle in Ancelotti’s squad this season, which saw them give go through a terrible slump, their worst in over 15 years. That has both the owner and the manager convinced reinforcements are needed for a revival.
Despite http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/John-Terry-c18895 claiming his side were not too old, it is known for a fact that the Blues have an ageing squad. That, among other things has affected their performance recently, with the absence of key players due to injury and suspension
leaving them without any suitable substitutions. Ancelotti’s attempt to bring on the younger players did not work too well either, with most of them now being loaned out to smaller sides so that they can gain valuable first team experience. Torres’ arrival
at Stamford Bridge might be the best thing for the Blues at the moment, it could put them right back in the title race and increase their chances in the cup competitions.
