Torrey Pines High boys volleyball team defeat Rancho Bernardo 3-2
Torrey Pines High’s boys volleyball team had a day to remember on Friday (May 13, 2011) as they were able to defeat Rancho Bernardo.
Both teams competed against each other in the quarterfinal of the California lnterscholastic Federation (CIF) San Diego Section Division I playoffs. Torrey Pines was able to hand out a defeat to Rancho while playing at their home court.
The visiting Rancho did not go down without putting up a fight and took the match to five long and thrilling sets. By the time Torrey Pines was celebrating its hard earned victory by cheering along with the home crowd, Rancho left the court with heads hung
low.
The scoreboard displayed the following final set scores that summarized the happenings of the match: 25-21, 23-25, 21-25, 25-15 and 15-12.
With a win, the Torrey Pines have been able to improve their overall number of wins to 19. They have been able to accomplish these victories at the cost of incurring defeats that amount to 11.
As compared to the performance statistics of the number four ranked Falcons, the overall season record of the number fifth ranked, Broncos stands a shade paler. The Broncos have been able to tally a total number of 15 wins this season. These victories have
been registered after 12 losses in all.
In the first set of the game both the Falcons and the Broncos came out strong. For the most part of the game, the two teams were almost neck-to-neck with each other.
However, as the set reached its final stages, the Falcons were able to push ahead and seal the deal on the opening game at 25-21.
After having lost the initial set, the Broncos rallied together and were able to step up their game. They put up a considerable challenge for the Falcons to deal with. The Falcons did not make it easy for the Broncos, but they were able to win the second
set at 25-23.
Building on the momentum by winning the second set, the Broncos were able to take the lead early on in the third set of the game as well. Consequently, the Broncos won the third set at 25-21.
The Falcons came out from a 2-1 deficit to win the fourth and fifth ones at 25-15 and 15-12 respectively.
"Our mentality is always to stop a run right as they start, because when we have the momentum, we are playing really well", Sean Kemper of the Torrey Pines said. "We strayed from that in a few of the games, and we had to make sure that was the focus".
