Torrey Pines: one of the world's most famous municipal courses
Torrey Pines Golf Course, one of the world's most famous municipal courses, is located on the coastal bluffs of Southern California. It lives up to the hype, has a beautiful location and an immaculately manicured golf course.
Lush greens and stunning textures of trees surrounding the area add to the beauty of the course.
It is listed among the ‘America’s Best Municipal Courses’ by renowned magazines in the United States, such as Golfweek Magazine, San Diego Union-Tribune and San Diego Magazine.
There are basically two golf courses on Torrey Pines – the South course and the North course – both of which consist of 18 holes each.
Both the courses provide some of the best views of the ocean from several holes. It is also truly a golfers’ ‘paradise’, with gorgeous greens, beautiful scenery and a tranquil environment.
Textures and the variety of the bunkers on both the courses are exceptional. They vary from hole to hole, and even within a hole.
The fairways on both the courses are stunning and are more than just gorgeous. However, the South Course on Torrey Pines is relatively difficult, compared to the North Course because of its length and design. South Course is much bigger than the North Course.
It can be said that difficulty is the essence of the South course. In the beginning, the fairways look quite easy to reach and driving the ball also seems easier if the ball is hit straighter.
However, the real difficulty starts after the first shot is played. Sometimes it requires three-wood or even five-iron on the second shot of almost each hole.
Certainly, it is the most intimidating and threatening golf course among the two available at Torrey Pines.
Therefore, most of the local people who come to spend their time at the course choose the North Course, as they think South Course is only for the professional players.
The South Course was basically redesigned in 2011 by one of the renowned golf designers around the world, Rees Jones.
There were several changes made to the original William F. Bell’s designed course, such as the length, curves, number of bunkers and width of the holes available. Moreover, the number of holes was also increased to 18 in the redesigning process.
Professionals from all over the over visit the course in January or February every year to participate in the PGA Tour’s Buick Invitational of California, also known as Farmers Insurance Open.
Moreover, the San Diego City Amateur Golf Championships and Junior World Golf Championships are also held every June and July, respectively, at the prestigious Torrey Pines golf course.
It also has the honour of hosting the 2008 US Open Golf Championship, which was won by the living legend, Tiger Woods, in the sudden death playoffs against the veteran American golfer, Rocco Mediate.
This was his third US Open and last major event’s claim to the title, so far. He is now four short of Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major wins.
Overall, Torrey Pines is one of the favourite destinations of many golfers around the world. They love to visit and display their game at the challenging and difficult courses.
It is a cynosure of golf and an exclusive enclave. While playing at the Pine valley, one feels as if they are in a different world, away from worries and tensions.
