Torro-Flor and Arrubarrena-Vecino through to the last stage of 2011 Andalucia Tennis Experience qualifiers
Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor of Spain defeated Austrian Yvonne Meusburger in straight sets to book her place in the third round of 2011 Andalucia Tennis Experience qualification tournament in Marbella. The local secured a 6-4,
7-5 victory over her opponent.
The 18-year-old Torro-Flor made a very confident start to the match. Her serve was on target most of the times as she committed minimal unforced errors. The Spaniard broke the serve in the seventh game of the first set and
then held on to the serve games to lead the set score by 1-0.
As the second set started, Torro-Flor looked a bit out of sorts. She miss timed her forehand and backhand shots on a few occasions and provided her opponent with the best chances of coming back into the contest. However when
the score was 6-5 in her favour, she made the crucial serve break which ensured her win in straight sets.
Ranked 286 in the world, Torro-Flor was extremely happy at her win over a much higher ranked opponent. In her next match-up she will take on Eva Fernandez-Brugues who defeated Corinna Dentoni to come that far.
Meusburger in contrast lacked fire power in several aspects of the game. Although she achieved a satisfactory 52 percent first serve conversion, her weak second serve always meant that she was fighting a losing battle. The
Austrian managed to convert only 20 percent of the points on her second serve.
Sje has participated in only two Women’s Tennis Association tour tournaments since the start of this season. She reached the second round of Bogota where she was knocked out in straight sets by Johansson and then fell in
the first round of Mexican Open. The 27-year-old frequently over-hit the ball and paid the price for not playing enough competitive tennis.
In another second round match Lara Arrubarrena-Vecino eased past 6-2, 6-2 Nanuli Pipiya of Russia to set up a clash with Nina Bratchikova. Bratchikova came back from a set deficit to defeat Elena Bogdan.
The match started on a very a competitive note as both players got involved in a few long rallies early on. Vecino looked in decent touch and executed her game plan brilliantly. She pushed her opponent to the baseline with
her powerful ground strokes and then used the open spaces to secure crucial points. The first set lasted for only 37 minutes as the Spaniard completely dominated the challenger.
The following set followed a similar trend. The 19 year old Vecino broke the serve at regular intervals and kept her defense in check as well which allowed her to save crucial points against her. The Spaniard ended her opponent’s
miserable day with a superb forehand winner down the line.
