Torsten Frings eyes move to the MLS
Thirty-three year-old Werder Bremen captain, Torsten Frings, who has spent his entire career playing in Germany's Bundesliga, has admitted that he could be on the move to the United States to play in the MLS if he can't secure a new contract with his current
side.
Aside from short spells with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich from 2002 to 2005, Frings has spent his entire career with Bremen, but his contract is set to expire in June.
"I definitely have one or two years of football left in me," Frings said. "I am physically fit and well on it. Werder Bremen, for sure, will be my first point of contact."
Frings told der Welt that playing for another Bundesliga team does not interest him and that if he can't agree to terms on a new contract with Werder Bremen he might look further afield.
"I would not consider a change within the Bundesliga," he said. "The USA would interest me. I am a fan of America, and New York is my dream city."
The New York Red Bulls currently boast a number of high profile players whose professional careers in Europe had begun to peter out, including
Thierry Henry, Rafael Marquez and Juan Pablo Angel.
Frings has had a prolific career patrolling the midfield in Germany with almost 500 appearances in all club competitions, and has earned 79 caps for his country while scoring 10 goals.
Werder Bremen currently sit in eighth spot in Germany with 14 points after nine games, and are currently ten points behind league leaders Mainz.
Bremen have had a difficult time so far this season in the Champions League competing in a very tough Group A which includes defending champion Inter Milan of Italy, as well as Tottenham Hotspur of England. Bremen are currently tied at the bottom of the
group with Dutch side Twente. Both have yet to win a game.
