  1. First of all there are alot of kinds of tortoises i have 2 Sulcata Tortoises that R about yearlings. If U just R getting 1 U ownly need a 10 gal. tank. Some substrate, witch is what you put on the bottom of the cage, so the tortoise can dig. Wood chips, or other substrates sold at a pet stores. All tortoises need 2 be soaked occasionally in an inch deep water dish. All tortoises like greens, check out this website on caring for tortoises,

    http://www.sulcata-station.org/housing.h...

    hope all goes well, good-luck!

  2. Tortoises are a bit of maintenance. They are expensive to purchase and to set up, but once you have the initial cost of lighting and habitat, they are wonderful companions. They are docile and have tons of personality. There are so many different types of tortoises in the pet trade, i suggest a russian tortoise, they stay small. Keep in mind how big it is going to get and whether or not you have room. They do grow fairly fast.

Browse around on www.turtletimes.com. They have a full list of all species of tortoise and their proper care. Adult sizes, life span, food, appropriate size habitats, etc. That is the best way to decide which is best for you.

    Good Luck!

  3. There are hundreds of types of tortoises.

I would recommend a Russian tortoise, because they stay relatively small compared to sulcata and leopard.

I have my Russian in an extra large bunny cage. It measures approx. 4x3 feet He has a heat lamp, UVB lamp and a nightlight for warmth.

He has a pool, and is given veggies every other day.

It is very important that you do not over feed. This is a death wish for a tortoise.

he has a log to hide under and to climb.

He has a pen in the backyard, which i take him out on sunny days as much as possible. They love to run around in grass and eat clover! So make sure you do not use any pesticides on your lawn if you plan on taking him outside.

If you do use pesticides, use cinderblocks to block off a flowerbed or area of the yard, and do not spray this area.
