Torvar Mirsky, Ian Williams book quarter-final places for 2011 Portimão Portugal Match Cup
Skipper of The Wave Muscat, Torvar Mirsky, and Ian Williams of Team GAC Pindar have stormed into the quarter-finals of 2011 Portimão Portugal Match Cup on Thursday, June 23. The race is the fourth
stage of ISAF World Match Racing Tour.
Mirsky sailed outstandingly on the day, as he won all his races and finished the second qualifying session on top with a 6-1 score. Williams, on the other hand, grabbed three wins to occupy second
spot at the end of day with 6-1.
It wasn't a sunny day for Reuben Corbett of AON Racing and Olli-Pekka Lumijarvi of Siragusawa Sailing Team as they could not make it to the advanced stages of regatta and tumbled down on last two
spots with 3-7 and 2-7 respectively.
On the other hand, ISAF World Match Racing Tour leader, Francesco Bruni, has only one three races yet and to reach to the quarter-finals, he has to show some classy display of his sailing skills to
make his presence felt. During his race with Alvaro Marinho, skipper Seth Sailing Team on day four, Bruni collided with a media RIB and discontinued his race. The match will be resume again on June 24.
After the end of the day, Bruni said while speaking to reporters, “We’re not super happy with the way we’re sailing here in Portugal. We have to turn it round and be strong tomorrow. We made a few
mistakes here and there. The crash with the press boat was a bit scary, it’s the first time I have hit a press boat. We’re a bit on the back foot now so we have to react tomorrow and sail better.”
The overall standings at the end of the day are given below:
