Toshiba 500GB External Hard Drive Fails

Toshiba 500GB External Hard Drive Connected to USB2.0 portI recently purchased the Drive and data copies/moves to the drive without a problem (various Video and Audio File formats). However, when I attempt to copy/move data from the drive to another location (another Drive or MP3 player) OR, for example, try to convert video from AVI to DVD - the drive stops responding and a Windows Pop-Up message tells me that the data has been lost.If I then switch off the drive and re-start it, the data is all there and I am able to continue moving it.To move/copy 1 folder containing 10 .avi files of approximately 700MB each, I had to restart the drive 5 times. If I wish to create Music CD's from MP3's or convert any of the files on the drive to a different format, the conversion/writing will fail, because the drive stops responding. I am running Windows XP Service Pack 2, all fully up-to date and I have already formatted the Drive after it began to be problematic(NTFS).Formatting did not resolve the problem.
