Ok , my toshiba laptop was just fine until a little while ago when all of the sudden, I turn it on and all i get is the black screen with white letters. This is exactly what is says:

SMART Failure predicted on Hard Disk 0: TOSHIBA MK4025GAS-(PM)

WARNING: Immediately back-up your data and replace your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent.

Press F1 to continue.

So then I press F1 and the screen goes black again. A little while later it says in white letters:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

<Windows root>/system32/hal.dll.

Please re-install a copy of the above file.

-------------

I think the hard drive needs to be replaced

My qtns are -

1. Can I replace the hard drive with Western Digital - 320GB Internal Hard Drive Model: WD3200JBRTL (

)

2 ) Also I wanted to know If the Toshiba DVD I got with the laptop will be good to install the windows XP or I have to arrange for windows myself ?

thanks

  1. Why not just try rebooting it with the backup disk that came with it? Same thing happened to me.

  2. 1. No, that HDD cannot be used with a laptop, because it is a desktop HDD.

    2. The recovery disc that came with the Toshiba is usually a media recovery for 64-bit, but if it is different, you may want to re-install XP using it.

    Your HDD's SMART Monitor had detected that something in the HDD has become corrupt, you could fix this easily, if you could download a LiveCD.
