Question:

Toss Consistency?

How can I consistently toss the ball where it will land in front of me in which I can get a decent quality serve, because right now, some of my tosses are going behind me.

Does it have to do with how you hold the ball?

Thanks!

  1. I have the exact same problem. My tosses are all over the place and I've been playing for about a year now. There will be the odd day in between when the toss is better but still too inconsistent.

This is from a video training that I have:

Try to keep the ball in the tip of your fingers and your arm fully extended when you throw the ball up. See if that helps.

  2. ok.. first off, the way you hold the ball does not do anything.  I sugest when you throw the ball start off throwing low and bend your nees to get lower than the ball. then hit is soft and try to get it into the box in a throwing motion. you can practice by throwing the ball over the net than use the same motion with the raqet.  then little by little start throwing higher.

                         hope it helps:-)

  3. A good lesson to improve ball tossing is to place you racket on the court in front of you and practice throwing the ball up with and trying to make is land on the racket strings on the floor. If you keep practicing for a while you will become used to throwing it consistently.

  4. Yes it does.

You have to keep your arm straight and "lift" the ball up. Don't throw it up. And to practice, it helps to go to your garage and mark a spot on the ceiling and toss your ball at that dot everytime. Most important still is to KEEP your arm straight.

  5. Get a frisbee-type toy that has a hole in the middle.......suspend it parallel to the ground, stand under it with arm outstretched so that ball is directly under hole, toss ball up thru hole............only toss 18 inches or less above your ideal contact point(as high as you can reach with sweet spot contacting ball).

Another good routine is to mark your contact point by stuffing a dead tennis ball into the links of the fence surrounding the courts. Stand 12-18 inches back from fence with arm outstretched almost touching fence......toss ball straight up along the fence about 18 inches above ball in fence. When learning service toss for flat(hard) serves it will feel as though you are tossing forward when tossing straight up.

The correct toss is the MOST important aspect of the serve! Do NOT swing at an improper toss!!!!!!!!
