Total newcomer to MP4 etc

Basically I can't understand the manual. I figured out FM radio. Is there a plain English description of how to operate for those over 30 (or more) as to how to operate this Christmas gift? First choice is how to operate the recording through its mike. I do have computer skills but something with five buttons blows me away.Thanks!
