Going to cruise to the Bahamas in May08, what do people do with there belongings when they do things in port like swimming? Don't I have to take my passport and ID with me when I leave the ship?

  1. When you board your ship, regardless of the cruise line, you will be issued a card which is the size of and looks like a credit card.   Some ships call it a sea pass, others call it a cruise card.  Regardless, it has all of your ID information in a magnetic strip on it and they also scan a photo of you onto the card when you board the ship. It is your pass to get off and on the ship in ports, as well as your room key and charge card for anything you buy on ship.  You MUST take the card with you when you leave the ship; they will scan it to show that you have left, and again when you return.  In some ports the cruise lines suggest that you also take a photo ID; some ports they  may ask to see one, some they do not.

I have been on many cruises and here's my recommendation.  In addition to the boarding card take your driver's license and a photocopy of your passport.   If you are worried about losing these then buy a security pouch (about $20 at Target) that you can put them in and wear a under your clothes (put them in a zip lock bag to keep them dry from perspiration).  If you are going to the beach or in the water, buy one of the small waterproof cases (about $5.) to put the id's in so they do not get wet.

As far as your other belongings, you need to beware of where you leave your camera, cell phone, watch, etc.  Its best to have someone you know watch them or put them in  a locker if its available.  If there is no locker available, the best rule is out of sight, out of mind; hide your stuff under clothes and towels. Don't worry about beach towels and sun screen, no one is likely to take them as you are likely to be with a group of people from your ship.
