Toto Wolff says Williams may keep their drivers in 2013 – Formula 1 news
Williams’ executive director Toto Wolff has said that they may keep their current drivers, Pastor Maldonado and Bruno Senna in 2013, but claimed that they still have one option at hand.
Maldonado has faced a lot of criticism because of his aggressive driving style and has struggle in most of the races in the season so far.
Nevertheless, he took his maiden victory in the Spanish Grand Prix and successfully brought a great delight to his team after quite a long time. Moreover, he became the first ever Venezuelan driver who has scored a grand prix victory in Formula 1.
On the other hand, Senna has struggled more than his teammate and has failed to attain competitive results for his team in the season so far.
Therefore, Maldonado’s race seat seems to be secured in the next season as he has an advantage over the Brazilian driver because of his one race win in the ongoing season. In addition, he has a strong support of a Venezuelan oil company, PDVSA.
Additionally, Wolff has also admired the talent and driving skills of the 27-year-old and showed inclination towards keeping him in the team in the next season too.
“It is one of the possibilities. I like Pastor a lot. He's not only a great guy, he has tremendous speed and he just needs to get it right and I think more experience he will get better that it will be,” he said. “He had some tough races and tough moments
this year, being blamed for being a crash driver. So it makes him stronger and I believe in him.”
Contrarily, he said that Senna’s performance has been reasonable but not good enough. Hence, they are considering promoting their reserve driver, Valtteri Bottas in the coming year.
“Equally Bruno has shown okay performances, good performances, scored points. But then we have Valtteri also who is a long-term prospective and who is judged as being new kid on block,” he added.
It will be interesting to see whether Bottas will be able to secure a race seat in the Grove based team or not.
