AVB under pressure once again, as Spurs succumb to shock home defeat against Wigan
Andre Villas Boas will be feeling the heat yet again, after his side were stunned 1-0 by a rejuvenated Wigan Athletic on Saturday. It was the Spurs second home defeat on the bounce, after also losing out to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 last month.
Just when it seemed that things had started to go AVB’s way, after the London based team recorded a historic 3-2 triumph at Old Trafford, things have spun out of the hands of the Portuguese manager.
After failing to taste sweet flavour of revenge over his former employers Chelsea, the London-based team were knocked out of the Capital One Cup competition by Norwich City. Now, their defeat at the hands of the Latics has forced them to relinquish their
grip on the fourth-place in the table.
What was even more disappointing and frustrating for the fans was the manner in which their team conducted themselves on Saturday. Playing against a team which are fighting for their survival in the top-flight, and that too at their own citadel, it was expected
that the hosts would simply breeze past their opponents.
However, that was not to be the case. Although the home team started the proceedings brightly, they failed to develop any kind of sustained pressure on the Wigan players during the first half and were forced to draw on their defences in order to keep the
visitors at bay.
And soon after the break, they found themselves chasing the game, as a poor goalkeeping error from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Shaun-Maloney-c33274,
instead spilling the ball at the feet of Watson, who tucked in an easy finish.
The goal triggered panic amongst the already beleaguered Tottenham players, with the manager forced to bring on the burly Adebayor in place of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jermain-Defoe-c18359.
However, the decision did not seem to have any bearings on the course of the game as Martinez’s men looked largely untroubled and kept on creating the better of the opportunities.
Late on, the Spurs did enjoy a good spell, as they kept on flirting outside the box, delivering cross after cross and with the attackers taking a host of long-range efforts. Despite all their efforts, the Wigan defence refused to give in, as they denied
AVB a much-needed result while earning all three points themselves to get a good distance away from the relegation zone.
The defeat was surely irksome for the Tottenham players and fans, and especially for Villas Boas, who is being started to be considered by many as a Premier League failure. Nonetheless, it is important that the team set aside the disappointment of their
lamentable performance and look to bounce back in their next match against Manchester City.
Their confidence might be depleted, but they have already shown this season that they can get the better of any team at any stadium on their day.
