Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp admits http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786
Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp seems to have changed his mind about selling versatile midfielder Luka Modric. The Spurs have so far rejected two bids by London rivals Chelsea for the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Croatia-c2879 international, but the Blues are expected to present
a further improved third bid for the 25-year-old Modric.
While Redknapp, along with club chairman http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Daniel-c9879 Levy were previously determined not to sell the Croatian midfielder. They seemed to have changed their mind, with Redknapp admitting he was considering selling Modric and bringing in other players as replacements.
Chelsea are expected to offer £27 million plus a player to convince Tottenham to accept their third bid before time runs out.
The Spurs boss revealed that while he did not want Modric to leave White Hart Lane, he was now considering the possibility of him leaving in the current transfer window. Redknapp admitted he would be able to bring in about four players with the transfer
fee he would get from Modric’s sale, and said it could be better for the squad.
Redknapp said while speaking to reporters:
“We've got two options with Luka. Either we keep a fantastic player or we sell him, get the money and bring in four players and have a better team.
I want him to stay but if he's going I want the opportunity to get other players in.”
However, Redknapp said there was no possibility of selling Modric to Chelsea or any other side on the deadline day of the transfer window. Levy has previously had a bad experience with transfer activity on the last day of the transfer window when he sold
striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Dimitar-Berbatov-c11254 to Premier League champions Manchester United in 2008.
The Tottenham Hotspur chairman has no plans of repeating his mistake in the current transfer window. He has made it clear he would sell Modric well before the last day of the transfer window, so the Spurs would have adequate time to bring in suitable replacements.
Tottenham Hotspur have identified possible targets but are waiting for Modric to leave before they make concrete bids.
He said:
“There's no chance the chairman will sell him on the last day of the transfer window. He did that with Berbatov a few years ago and ended up with no strikers. He won't do that again.”
Redknapp admitted he understood Modric’s desire to leave White Hart Lane for Chelsea, with the Blues set to participate in the UEFA Champions League. Tottenham Hotspur failed to qualify for the European competition since they finished at fifth spot on the
Premier League table and will now be playing in the Europa League instead.
Apart from the obvious Champions League advantage the Blues have over Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea enjoy the status of a big club. Despite poor form last season, they managed to finish as runners-up to Premier League winners Manchester United. Lastly, Chelsea
are offering the Croatian international a much more attractive pay package than he is currently receiving at Tottenham Hotspur.
Redknapp continued:
“He's had his head turned by the chance to play in a team that could win the Champions League this season and I think people can probably understand that.”
