Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp denies Rio Ferdinand and Gary Cahill interest
Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp has denied rumours that he is eyeing a move for Manchester United defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gary-Cahill-c14439 in the upcoming January transfer window.
While the Spurs were linked with the 25-year-old Cahill in the summer transfer window, along with a host of other clubs, the news of the London side eyeing Ferdinand comes as a surprise. Redknapp insisted he was not considering signing the Red Devils defender, who has not had the best fitness record recently.
Redknapp said while speaking to reporters:
“I haven't even thought about Rio to be honest.
I signed him as a kid. I love Rio as a boy and a player, but it's not something we have ever enquired about.
It's going to be difficult for him to leave Man United isn't it?”
While Ferdinand, the 32-year-old England international, is still considered to be one of the best central defenders in the world, his form has faltered in recent seasons. Last season the former West Ham United man made just 29 appearances in all competitions owing to a nagging injury.
His form has been somewhat similar for the England national team, because of which the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabio-c13152 Capello has had to turn elsewhere. In fact, it was after Ferdinand’s unavailability that the Italian manager decided to include Cahill in the squad.
Redknapp admitted he was an admirer of the Manchester United defender but denied having made enquiries regarding him. The English manager revealed he had not considered signing Ferdinand since he did not think there was a possibility of the defender leaving Old Trafford.
In addition to that, Redknapp was certain he had a decent defence, which did not necessarily need strengthening in the winter transfer window. The likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Younes-Kaboul-c37543 and Sebastian Bassong are all available for selection.
He revealed:
“I'm not looking to strengthen in defence, really. We are strong in defence. We have Dawson, King, Gallas, Kaboul and (Sebastien) Bassong," said Redknapp, who takes his team to face Newcastle at St James' Park on Sunday.”
The Spurs boss defended his interest in the Bolton Wanderers defender, claiming he was only interested because of the injuries that had ruled out King and Gallas. However, with the two having been cleared, Redknapp did not feel the need to continue his chase for Cahill.
Redknapp concluded:
“I went for Cahill because at the time I couldn't see Ledley being fit and because http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/William-Gallas-c36874 had a calf strain.”
Despite his claims, it is rumoured that Redknapp will still try and sign Cahill in the January transfer window. The Bolton Wanderers defender has proved to be one of the most sought after defenders, something which has also helped him secure a place in the England national team this year.
