Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp not optimistic about Europe chances
Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp revealed he felt it was highly unlikely his side would make it to the next stage of the UEFA Europa League competition after his side lost 2-1 to PAOK Salonika last night. The visitors scored two early goals to take
the lead and even though they were later reduced to ten men, maintained their lead and won the match.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Luka-Modric-c22857 scored a consolation goal for the hosts after a successfully converted penalty, but it was a case of too little too late. The English manager felt there was very little his side could do now to ensure qualification to the knockout stages as things
were now out of their hands.
Redknapp said while speaking to reporters:
“I am disappointed now because we are not going to be in the last 32
It's very slim - it is very difficult now. I wanted to stay in the competition but it wasn't to be. Full credit to the opposition, they worked hard and looked dangerous.”
If Tottenham Hotspur are to qualify they must score more than five goals in their next fixture to overcome the goal difference Rubin Kazan have established. The Spurs face Shamrock http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rovers-c40385 next month, with Rubin Kazan needing just a draw to take them through
to the next round against an already qualified PAOK Salonika team.
According to Redknapp, it was sloppy play by his team that was to blame for the poor performance and which ultimately led to their defeat.
He admitted:
“We started sloppy and didn't defend well. It was a new back four and for the first 10 minutes we started like we did not know each other.”
Even though Defoe scored an equalizer, Redknapp admitted it had been a foul and the referee had given the right decision. Defoe’s studs struck defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Pablo-Contreras-c28965 and while he was on the floor, the Englishman scored, a goal which was not rightfully
given according to Redknapp.
Redknapp said:
“The kid handballed it on the line and we made it 2-1 and at that point I thought we would come back and win it, but they got bodies back and it was difficult.”
