Tottenham Hotspur defender Ledley King working hard for new contract
Tottenham Hotspur defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 international will be out of contract with the London side in the summer and unless he can impress Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp he will unlikely be offered a new contract.
King is a graduate of the Tottenham Hotspur youth academy, graduating to the senior team in 1998, which makes him the longest serving player at the club. However, after just nine appearances in all competitions for the Spurs last season due to a chronic injury, Redknapp told the player he would have to be consistent if he wished to earn a new contract.
The English defender is therefore targeting more appearances for Tottenham Hotspur and admitted this could very well be the most important season of his life. Having been with the Spurs all his career, King has never had to fight for a new contract, which is why he said he was eager to prove to the manager and everyone else that he deserved a new contract.
King said while speaking to reporters:
“It is the first time I have been in a situation like this - when my contract is up. So it is a big season.
I have to prove I am still worth it. I can't see myself pulling on a shirt for anybody else at this stage of my career - although a player can never say never.”
King admitted his biggest challenge was to manage his injury and try and stay fit for the upcoming fixtures in which he was expected to feature. Having been given a target of 20 games this season in the Premier League, King said he would not stop trying if he reached the 20 match mark, promising to work hard throughout the season. He revealed he was focusing on getting stronger and remaining consistent week after week.
He revealed:
“At the end of the day, I just want to stay fit and if I can play, let's see what position that puts me in at the end of the season.
It is down to me to play the games. If I don't play enough games, it is a difficult position.”
With the injury that he has, King has to train harder than most of the other players, which he admitted could get frustrating sometimes. However, he revealed it was worth it as long as it helped improve his fitness and performance for his side. King believed Redknapp’s support had been essential in helping him return to first team football after a particularly disappointing season.
