Tottenham Hotspur defender hopes club can take European form to league
Tottenham Hotspur defender Ledley King has expressed his hope that his club can recreate their form in the UEFA Champions League when playing in the English Premier League.
Spurs faced FC Twente in the group stage of Europe’s elite club competition earlier this week at White Hart Lane and they demolished the Dutch champions 4-1. They also notched up an impressive victory over Swiss outfit Young Boys at the play-off stage, winning
4-0 to ensure their progression to the Champions League for the first time in their history.
With a big match against fellow top-four contenders Aston Villa on Saturday, Spurs skipper King is hoping that he and his team-mates can transfer their strong European form into the domestic arena.
'We want to compete in both arenas'
He told The Telegraph that: "It is important that we take the form we showed against Twente into the league. That's what we've struggled to do in recent years; when we've been in Europe our league form has suffered, so that's what we want to put right this
season."
Spurs have had a decent start to the domestic campaign, picking up eight points from their first six games. However, they lost to Wigan Athletic after the victory over Young Boys, and King is hoping that the post-Champions League fatigue does not set in
again against Villa.
King added that: “We slipped up against Wigan. Losing that game gives us an incentive not to let that happen again. People are looking at us after our European games, the spotlight's on us and teams are waiting for us to slip up and are saying, 'It's the
same old Tottenham'. We got a good result in the end against Wolves, we were disappointed against West Ham, now we're at home again, to Villa, and we want three points from our home games."
Villa are currently in fifth place, but a Spurs win could see them leapfrog the Birmingham-based club as they are just two points behind.
