The lilywhites have beaten http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 in the race to acquire the Belgian stopper’s signature and are expected to reach agreement with the Eredivisie champions in the coming days.
Reports from Amsterdam Arena indicate that Tottenham Hotspur have beaten Arsenal in the race to sign Ajax Amsterdam centre-back, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814. The two clubs are expected to reach an agreement in the coming days over a deal believed
to be in the region of 10 million Euros.
The Belgian stopper, who has been linked with several European top flight clubs following his consistent performances for the Amsterdammers, is expected to travel to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 in the next few days to see the Spurs’ training facilities
and get a feel of it.
According to a source that spoke with goal.com:
“Vertonghen has made his mind up and his move to Spurs could all be agreed within the next few days”.
Despite immense interest from other European giants, the 25-year-old preferred to join Lilywhites irrespective of whether they manage to earn UEFA Champions League ticket at the end of the 2011/12 campaign.
Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham is currently occupying the fourth spot on the English Premier League table, only a point ahead of the fifth placed, Newcastle United.
The Spurs will take on Fulham in their final league fixture at White Hart Lane on May 13. Should the North London club manage to bag all three points on the final day of the season, they will secure their berth in the Europe’s
primary club competition next term.
If Vertonghen’s move to Lilywhites materialise in the coming days, it will be a huge blow to Arsenal, who have been tracking the Belgian International for quite some time, and have targeted him as one of the club’s primary defensive
acquisitions this summer.
The highly-rated central defender, who can also play in a central midfield position, has thus far made 148 appearances for Ajax since making his professional debut in the 2006/07 season.
Although, the Belgian stopper has a year remaining on his current contract, his desire to leave the Eredivisie champions this summer persuaded the club management to let go of their prized asset.
