Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes keen to play in UEFA Champions League next season
Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Heurelho-Gomes-c16173 has expressed his desire to play in the UEFA Champions League in the 2011-12 season.
He also admitted his mistake of letting Cristiano Ronaldo’s shot slip through his hands but added that it would not have made any difference in the final outcome even if he had managed to block it.
The 30-year-old was talking after the Spurs lost to Real Madrid that ended their campaign in the Champions League. Jose Mourinho’s side got the better of the North London club during the second leg of the quarter-final tie played recently. Madrid defeated
Spurs 4-0 in the first leg before edging past them by a 1-0 margin in the second leg.
Gomes spilled a Ronaldo shot which ended in the back of the net. With the goal, any remaining hopes for the Spurs were gone. The goalkeeper believed that the Spurs were wonderful throughout the campaign and getting through to the last-eight of the competition
was quite an achievement.
He claimed that the Spurs would be a completely different unit come the start of new season in order to qualify for the Champions League again.
“It's lovely for everyone now because we know what it's like to play in the Champions League,” Gomes said. “We now have to be strong and finish in the [Premier League] top four and play for the Champions League again next season. Next season will be a little
bit different because we now know what it's like to play in the Champions League.”
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Brazil-c2858 international also said that the Spurs manager Harry Redknapp praised the efforts of his team after the club’s journey in the competition came to an end.
The North London club managed to beat the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 Milan and also thrashed the current Serie A leaders AC Milan out of the competition.
Further commenting on Redknapp, Gomes said, “He said well done to everybody because I think we did well in the competition. It was not easy to qualify in the first place and then to play against AC Milan and Real Madrid for the first time. I think we did
great and he said well done to everyone.”
Spurs are currently 5th in the Premier League table with 53 points and are 3 points behind the 4th placed Manchester City.
