Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper tips club for strong Champions League run
Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes is convinced that his club will go on to enjoy a strong run in the UEFA Champions League.
The English Premier League club is playing in the competition for the first time after finishing fourth in the league last season and overcoming the challenge of Swiss outfit Young Boys in a play-off match.
They have got their group stage campaign off to a strong start, having drawn 2-2 against Werder Bremen away from home and thrashed Dutch champions FC Twente 4-1 at White Hart Lane.
Although Spurs are well-placed to progress from the group, Gomes, who reached the semi-final of the tournament with PSV Eindhoven five years ago, claimed that Harry Redknapp’s side is capable of going even further in the competition.
When asked by a reporter from Champions, the tournament’s official magazine, if a place in the knockout phase would be satisfactory, Gomes said, "I am an optimist. When I joined Spurs, I said my goal was to win the Premier League. People laughed,
but that's how I am. If we make the knockout stages, anything could happen."
The 29-year-old was also asked how the squad at Spurs compares to the one at PSV five years ago.
"It's tricky to compare, but maybe you can point to the absence of superstars and the presence of young players willing to work their socks off. That PSV side, for example, had only Phillip Cocu as a famous name, but the other players showed that no team
would walk over us. I see the same spirit at Spurs and hope we can emulate 2004-05. We have a group that is growing together at the same time and individuals who are making progress. Gareth Bale, for example, is coming along really well."
