Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp’s proposal: Two referees in the EPL
Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp seems to be spending a lot of time talking to the media, in fact, the only time he’s not speaking to reporters is when the Spurs are playing. His latest column in the Sun claimed that the English Premier League should
have two referees instead of one to reduce the chance of error in decision making.
The reason for this outburst is because Tottenham Hotspur were on the receiving end of bad decision by the referee against Stoke City over the weekend. Redknapp was certain the presence of two referees would definitely help stop similar situations from arising
in the future.
Redknapp said while speaking to reporters:
“This could make me just about the most unpopular manager among my colleagues in the Premier League, but I reckon it might be a good idea to have not one but two referees in every match.”
While the English manager admitted that his proposal could make him unpopular and would take long to implement if accepted, he was determined to stand by it. He was certain it would definitely reduce room for error and make the game more fair for every team.
He claimed:
“I don't want to criticise them, but if we can think of a solution where they can work more effectively and we avoid these fall-outs surely it must be better for us all.”
The Tottenham Hotspur manager revealed that he did not want to criticise referees since they were only human and were also capable of making mistakes. However, he felt that if there was something they could do to help they should do it, like introduce another
referee in the Premier League.
Redknapp said:
“However, if we had two referees on one pitch, perhaps one in each half, surely it would cut the risk of getting a big decision wrong by 50 per cent.”
According to Redknapp, it was an option worth exploring, especially since the addition of referees in Europe had helped with the decision making and decreased room for mistakes. He urged the FA to consider his proposal, since it would definitely help.
He continued:
“In Europe, we have had extra refs on the touchline and that has helped.”
