Tottenham Hotspur manager keen to join Europe's elite
Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp is eager to guide his club into the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League with a win over Werder Bremen in the group stage of the competition on Wednesday 24 November.
Spurs are competing in Europe's elite club competition for the first time this season and have impressed onlookers with their brand of attacking football.
With a highly praised performance against Inter Milan in their 3-1 win over the defending European champions behind them, Spurs now has a strong opportunity to progress into the knock-out stages if they are able to defeat Werder.
Spurs are favoured to win the clash at White Hart Lane, as Werder has yet to score in November and are toiling in 12th place in the Bundesliga. They have won just three of their last 16 games across all competitions and are missing 10 players through injury
and suspension.
As a result, Redknapp is confident of picking up the win and hinted that his ambitions may be even greater than simply making the last 16 of the Champions League.
He told reporters that: “If you have real belief in your dressing room, you can achieve anything."
Meanwhile, Redknapp has yet to decide whether to deploy the returning Jermain Defoe from the start on Wednesday. The England international is set to continue his comeback from a 10-week lay-off in the match, and while Redknapp will be careful not to overwork
the attacker, he may hand Defoe a starting place as star midfielder Rafael van der Vaart looks likely to miss the game through injury.
Redknapp praised Defoe, who helped Spurs record a famous 3-2 win over fierce rivals Arsenal when he came on in the second half on Saturday 20 November, and said that he was “without a doubt our biggest goalscorer. If he could have a run of banging the goals
in he could really push us into the title race. If he could get eight, nine or 10 in the next 15 games, it would be fantastic for us.”
