Jermaine Jenas, the 28-year-old Tottenham Hotspur midfielder, revealed he was looking forward to regaining his form after transferring to Aston Villa in the summer transfer window on a season long loan. After falling out of favour with the Spurs manager
Harry Redknapp, Jenas decided to part ways with the London side and look elsewhere for regular first team opportunities.
Jenas joined Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2005 from Newcastle United for a fee of £7 million on a long-term contract. Up until the 2008-2009 season, Jenas managed to maintain a spot in the first team, making an average of 30+ appearances in all competitions
over the seasons and scoring a decent number of goals. However, his last two seasons at the club have been highly disappointing.
After taking over the club in 2008, Redknapp did not feel Jenas was a part of his plans for the future and the midfielder found himself on the bench. Last season, Jenas went on to make just 28 appearances in all competitions, 20 of which were in the English
Premier League. It was the lack of regular football that urged him to make the move to Villa Park over the summer.
Jenas said in an interview:
“It's been frustrating for me being in and out, in and out and it's almost impossible to generate any form.
Obviously, I've still got to get into this team. It's a very good side with some very good players.”
He continued:
“I looked at what they had within the squad, how I would fit into that and what we could achieve and it excited me.”
Jenas was aware that he would have to work hard to earn a place in the Aston Villa first team, but was willing to do so. He said he was confident he could rebuild his form, improve and establish himself as a regular in the Aston Villa squad. The player felt
his efforts were being wasted at White Hart Lane and hoped his new temporary side would make better use of him in the current season.
Jenas said:
“I've got to work hard in training to try and get a starting place within this team and then I can build up my form and produce the kind of performances I know I can produce.
I'm still a young 28, I've still got plenty of energy and plenty more to come.”
