Tottenham Hotspur plan January swoop for Andy Carroll
English Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur are said to be mulling over a potential move for Newcastle United striker Andy Carroll when the transfer window once again opens for business in January.
The 21-year-old had been tipped by many pundits for great things after making his mark with the club as he helped them win promotion from the Football League Championship last term and was named in the Professional Footballers’ Association Championship Team of the Year in the process.
After Newcastle’s return to the top division of English football, Carroll has netted four goals in four games — including a hat-trick in the 6-0 demolition of Aston Villa.
Striking options
That impressive form has reportedly attracted the attention of Spurs manager Harry Redknapp, who is said to be readying a bid to bolster his options in attack. Though Redknapp can already call on the likes of Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Roman Pavlyuchenko and Robbie Keane to fill the striking berths, he is still exploring other avenues as his side chase four trophies this season.
According to TalkSport, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy will open his chequebook and allow Redknapp to spend up to six million pounds in an attempt to secure the services of Carroll — who was widely tipped for a call-up to the senior England squad following his exploits against Villa.
It is believed that Spurs had offered Keane to Newcastle over the summer as part of a part-exchange deal in a bid to get their hands on Carroll.
Aside from a six-month loan switch to Preston North End, England Under-21 international Carroll has spent his entire career at Newcastle. He has strong ties to Newcastle after growing up in the area and supporting the club as a boy, but the chance to play in the UEFA Champions League with Spurs — if they are still in the competition at the turn of the year — may be too much of an opportunity for the striker to turn down.
