Tottenham Hotspur set to sign William Gallas
English Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of completing a deal to sign William Gallas, it has been reported. BBC Sport said that the former Arsenal and Chelsea defender – who is available on a free transfer after leaving the Gunners this summer – will sign a one-year deal after a medical exam which is set to take place tomorrow.
Although the personal terms of the deal are yet to be finalised, the 33-year-old centre-back appears likely to become manager Harry Redknapp’s second signing of the summer. Gallas left Arsenal after rejecting a new deal which would have seen him take a pay cut. Though he will have to lower his wage demands to join Spurs, it looks as though a deal is imminent.
More options needed
With captain Ledley King’s playing time regularly cut short by a chronic knee problem and Jonathan Woodgate out for an extended period of time with a groin injury, Redknapp has been looking to boost his defensive options and provide competition for Michael Dawson, Sebastien Bassong and Younes Kaboul.
Redknapp has been trying to recruit the player for several weeks, and he revealed that he does not hold any fear of snapping up a player who has just left his club’s most bitter rivals. He told reporters last week that: "He's been an Arsenal player but he was at Chelsea before that and playing abroad before he arrived there. It's not like we would be signing (Arsenal icon) Tony Adams. He's a good player and he would be a very useful addition to our squad."
While there is no chance of the 84-times capped France international joining up in time to face Stoke City in the EPL on Saturday, he could be in line to make his debut at White Hart Lane against Swiss outfit Young Boys in the second leg of Spurs UEFA Champions League qualifying clash next Wednesday.
