Tottenham Hotspur striker Emmanuel Adebayor refuses to let offensive chants by Arsenal supporters affect his performance
Manchester City striker on loan to Tottenham Hotspur http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Emmanuel-Adebayor-c12526 revealed he was not particularly affected by the abusive chants by the Arsenal fans during the north London derby at White Hart Lane on Sunday. The former Arsenal striker was targeted
by the visiting fans, who went as far as to mock the gun attack on the Togo team bus in early 2010, which the 27-year-old survived.
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Togo-c3022 international was brilliant against his former side, but did not manage to find the back of the net as Tottenham Hotspur secured a 2-1 win over the weekend. The home win sees the Spurs in the top half of the table, while the defeat leaves Arsenal
in the bottom half of the table as unlikely title contenders. Since the incident, both clubs have condemned the offensive chants, but Adebayor revealed he was not bothered by the chanting.
Adebayor said while speaking to reporters:
“The songs that they sung about me were very bad, but was I surprised? No. Disappointed? Yes.
Obviously it was all meant to hurt me, to upset me, to anger me.”
Adebayor admitted that he wasn’t surprised by the treatment he had received from the Arsenal supporters, just disappointed since he had been with the London club for three-and-a-half seasons, from January 2006 to the summer of 2009. During that period the
striker went on to make 143 appearances in all competitions, with 62 goals and 21 assists.
The Togolese forward expressed his sadness over the fact that parents allowed their children to hear and sing such offensive chants. The incident, during which three people were killed, led to Adebayor’s retirement from international football, was very traumatizing.
The fact that it was used in the way it was by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 supporters is indeed very sad and Adebayor revealed he was pleased he had managed to ignore the chants.
Adebayor revealed:
“It'd be a great shame if they just remember the stupid songs and not the great football. I'm so glad I kept my dignity in the face of people behaving like that.”
The player refused to be brought down by the offensive chants and said he would never let anything as trivial as that affect his performance. Having survived the gun attack, Adebayor revealed the chanting at White Hart Lane over the weekend did not make
a difference to him. In four appearances for the Spurs, he has already gone on to score three goals and provide two assists.
He continued:
“Those those chants won't ever have an effect on me. I've been through too many difficult times to let a minority of people singing silly songs affect my performance.
But if I can survive the bullets in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Angola-c2838 then a few mindless insults will have little impact."
