Tottenham Hotspur target Luis Fabiano signs two-year extension with Sevilla
Luis Fabiano Clemente has poured cold water on a rumoured move to English Premier League outfit Tottenham Hotspur by signing a two-year extension to his deal with Sevilla today.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp had been keen to bolster his frontline by recruiting the Brazil international, who had been valued at around £30m by his club despite having had less than a year left to run on his contract. Redknapp had only been prepared to offer around half of that sum in a last-ditch bid to sign the player before the transfer window closes tomorrow.
However, such a bid would appear to prove fruitless after the 29-year-old, who was also being strongly linked with a move to French Ligue 1 champions Olympique Marseille, decided to extend his stay with La Liga club Sevilla.
Impressed at World Cup
The striker impressed during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa where he netted three times before his country exited the competition at the quarter-final stage.
Fabiano has been with Sevilla since 2005. In 192 matches with the club across all competitions, he has netted 95 goals. His most successful goalscoring season in Spain was the 2007-08 campaign, where he struck 34 times in 44 games. He has also won the UEFA Cup twice, the UEFA Super Cup, Copa del Rey and Supercopa de Espana.
The forward has also featured 43 times for the Brazil national team and has scored 28 goals. He has won the 2004 Copa America and 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup with his country.
With a move for Fabiano appearing to be dead in the water, Redknapp may now up his interest in Guissepe Rossi of Villareal and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar of AC Milan in a bid to bring in a top-class forward. However, should he still wish to sign a new player he will have to move quickly before the transfer window slams shut.
