Tottenham Hotspur were brilliant against AC Milan: Harry Redknapp
Tottenham Hotspur went through to the last eight of the UEFA Champions League after playing a highly tense goal-less draw against AC Milan at the White Hart Lane on Wednesday, 9 March, 2011.
Spurs boss, Harry Redknapp hailed the performance of his team and applauded the efforts of the young Brazilian defender Sandro Ranieri who stood like a wall and denied each and every attack from the away side.
“It's a fantastic achievement for this club, playing in the Champions League for the first time in our history. To have beaten http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Inter-c39567 Milan in the group stage and now AC Milan, well anything else is a bonus now, just being in the Champions League is a bonus,” Redknapp said.
The Spurs boss further hailed the performance of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Dawson-c25288 who, along with Sandro, never allowed Rossoneri to find a way past their stubborn rear-guard. Gomes was phenomenal as well, making some outstanding saves to deny Milan a goal.
This is the first time that Tottenham have qualified for the last eight of the UEFA Champions League since 1962 when they made it to the semi-finals.
Redknapp further praised his team’s efforts by noting that no one even considered his team to qualify for the Champions League, let alone making it into the last eight.
“Two years ago no-one would have believed we could do this, that's the improvement we have made,” he said.
Spurs, after qualifying for the last eight of the Champions League have also become the first English team to do so this season, as Chelsea and Manchester United still have to play their second leg.
Tottenham are currently fifth in the League table, three points behind http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 and are fighting to retain their place for the next year’s Champions League.
