Tottenham Hotspur’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Luka-Modric-c22857 not worth £22 million, Chelsea have their bid rejected
Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly rejected London rivals http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786’s £22 million bid for Croatian midfielder Luka Modric.
The 25-year-old has been in fantastic form for the Spurs over the past season which has earned him interest from the top European sides.
Chelsea were considered to be among the favourites to sign the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Croatia-c2879 international, but had their first bid rejected by Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp.
According to Modric’s agent, Nikki Arthur Vuksan, the Blues would have to make an improved bid if they wished to sign the player.
Vuksan said in an interview:
“The price that has been written greatly undervalues the price that the club values him at the moment.
If there has been a bid of £22m I am not surprised that the club have rejected it. That figure is near to the fee that Spurs paid for Luka [around £16m].”
Even if an improved bid is made, Tottenham Hotspur need to be willing to part ways with Modric, who signed a contract extension in 2010.
As things stand, Redknapp is not willing to let Modric leave White Hart Lane, describing him as an “irreplaceable” part of the club.
According to the player’s agent his client is not interested in a move away, wishing to remain with the London club.
However, that has not stopped the likes of Chelsea, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Real-c30728 Madrid and Manchester United to make inquiries about the midfielder.
Modric’s agent revealed:
“The chairman has said he doesn't want to sell Luka and Luka is happy at Spurs.
[But] if an offer comes to the club that they are happy to accept, then he is willing to talk to the club. Let's see what happens.”
Chelsea are currently without a manager, with Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti getting the boot at the end of last season.
The former AC Milan boss was sacked for his failure to lead the London club to any silverware in a highly disappointing season.
The Blues apparently cannot make a signing in the summer transfer window unless they have signed a replacement for Ancelotti, which gives the other side’s an advantage over them.
If Chelsea do not work fast to make a better offer, it is highly likely Manchester United will. The move to Old Trafford could go through, especially with Redknapp determined not to sell Modric to Chelsea.
The Spurs boss had labelled Chelsea’s bid for Modric as “ridiculous”, claiming the Croatian playmaker was not for sale.
Redknapp said:
“Luka is not for sale. If there has been a bid of £22m that is ridiculous. There are people being sold for £20m who are not fit to lace Luka's boots.”
He was of course referring to the recent transfer of 20-year-old http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 for the fee of £20 million.
It is rumoured that Redknapp might be willing to accept a bid in the £50 million region for his star player.
