Tottenham Hotspur’s Luka Modric rubbishes move away reports as Roberto Mancini blames English media
Tottenham Hotspur’s Luka Modric has become the latest player from White Hart Lane to be connected to a move away from London following his rise to stardom. In recent weeks, Gareth Bale and Modric have both been on fire for the Spurs but in doing so the media
has made them a subject of intense transfer speculation. Modric has been linked with a move to Barcelona in Spanish Primera Division, it is being said that Barcelona are preparing a thirty million pound bid to secure the Croatian's signature.
Modric signed a new five year contract at Tottenham in the summer and now he is looking to make it to the UEFA Champions League’s knockout stages with his club. Harry Redknapp has lately transformed Tottenham into an intimidating squad as they defeated Inter
Milan in their UEFA Champions League match at the White Hart Lane. The 3-1 win over European champions was an emphatic statement of intent by the London club which qualified for the Champions League after finishing 4th in the 2009-2010 English Premier
League season.
Modric was in joyous mood during his interview to the press as he said, "Me going to Barcelona? Yes, I really hope that, but only as a Tottenham player in the next round of the Champions League. Let's be serious. All this is just so-called exclusive rumours,
but I don't know who really needs them. Are they funny? Yes, they are very funny for me. But of course, it is always nice to see your name being linked with such a club as Barcelona, but one has to keep their feet on the ground. At the end of the day it's
just rumours without any foundation. And I really don't want to talk about all this anymore. Since I moved here newspapers are always talking about me leaving for somewhere else.”
Elaborating further on the transfer news that has surrounded his career thus far, Modric said, "First it was Chelsea, then Inter Milan and also Manchester United, now it is Barcelona. But the only truth is that I just recently signed a new contract with
Tottenham. London is such a great place and at White Hart Lane I feel just like home. I know that the fans are happy with me; I have all the support I need to develop even more. I can make my football dreams come true with Tottenham and that is why all my
thoughts and also my future is with this club."
On the other hand, Roberto Mancini has been left raging after his side’s 3-1 defeat to Lech Poznan, the Polish league champions. Mancini told the press, “Why should I worry about being fired? This does not exist. To say the team are against me is lies –
all rubbish. There were some hard discussions with players but the team follows me and results are arriving. The tabloids rage on us because City are headed by an Italian. I am sorry to say this but the English are nationalists when it comes to football.”
It was seen as an attempted deflection of the criticism that has been levelled at Roberto Mancini due to his overtly defensive tactics with Manchester City.
The Italian manager went onto say, “City are fourth in the standings and we were in second. The club have asked me to qualify for next season’s Champions League and we are going well for that. I’m disappointed because we don’t deserve to lose the game. At
the moment everything is against us. We played a good game and we had a lot of chances to win. We lost the last three games but that is football, sometimes you play well, you deserve to score but you don’t. I think we can change this but at some situations
we must pay more attention. We can change this only if we stay together.”
