Tottenham Hotspur’s Michael Dawson targets European glory – English Premier League news
Tottenham Hotspur captain, Michael Dawson, has revealed that the Spurs will be going all-out in a bid to win next season’s UEFA Europa League crown. The skipper admitted that missing out on UEFA Champions League for the 2011/12 season has been disappointing,
but he claims that the supporters will still be behind the club during their Europa League campaign.
Having enjoyed a dream debut in the Champions League in the recently concluded campaign, Tottenham were desperate to keep their place in Europe’s most prestigious club competition for yet another season. However, they failed in their bid to secure a Champions
League spot, ultimately finishing the Barclays Premier League campaign in fifth place in the table. Their position in the standings has earned them a spot in next season’s Europa League, a tournament which the fans are finding difficult to get excited about.
The difference between the Champions League and the Europa League can be readily understood from the following fact: the prize money for winning the Europa League is less than the bonus a club receives for getting past the group stages of the Champions League.
Not only that, the second tier European competition is also a great drain on resources, requiring participation in significantly more matches than its more prestigious counterpart. Many feel that the tournament will be distraction in the Spurs’ bid for a higher
finish in next season’s Barclays Premier League.
There is speculation that the Spurs boss, Harry Redknapp, is planning to use the Europa League as a training ground for the youngsters in the club. However, Spurs http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Dawson-c25288, has refuted claims that that the London club does not care about winning
the competition.
Speaking on the matter, he said, “We wanted to be in the Champions League but it hasn't happened and when the Europa League starts we will be going out there to win it. It's another competition for the fans. The ground, whether it's the UEFA Champions League
or the UEFA Europa League, will be sold out every week."
Tottenham Hotspur ended the 2010/11 Barclays Premier League in fifth place, six points behind fourth placed http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429.
